Excerpt: Altinkum is a rapidly growing resort in western Turkey, 123 km from the town Aydin. The resort is a popular tourist destination at the Aegean Sea, and in addition to many beautiful beaches there are also the ruins of the Ionian city of Didyma (Today Didim). Most famous of all is the ancient Temple of Apollo. It is located in Aydin province between the city of Izmir and the resort Bodrum, with about 90 minute drive each way. The Greek holiday island Kos is an hours boat ride away. Samos is also nearby, and also Rhodes is in range. From being a small fishing village, the area has developed into a popular tourist area. Altikum and Didim was formerly two separate towns, but have grown together and now has approximately 35 000 residents. Approximately 5000 of these are foreigners who live here all year, most of them are British. The local population are known for their friendliness and openness, and crime is virtually non-existent. The place has its own micro-climate with lower humidity than the southern part of Turkey, and is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) because the climate in Altinkum has a positive effect for people with asthma and joint ailments. Altinkum has 340 sunny days a year, hot summer months and temperate winters with little variation during the day - about 15 degrees at night and 20 degrees a day from November to February. The name Altinkum means Golden Sand and has 3 beaches. People are coming to spend their holidays both from both Europe and Turkey.
